Starkly putit s a modern day slave trade were boys, girls, men, and women are exploited andforced into hard labor or prostitution. It may shock you know that the number ofOhio children being trafficked across our state today couldfill a large high school. An estimated 1,000 children every year are being exploited in our communitiesand forced into the commercial sex trade. As a result of the extensive awarenessand the training efforts throughout our state, we're beginning to see many moresurvivors come out of the shadows who have endured forced or compelled servicefor someone else's profit. Awareness is one of our biggest weapons against humantrafficking, and it does work. It's important to have conversations withyour friends, your neighbors, and colleagues to spread the word. Later I signed anumber of bills into law which significantly strengthed protections forvictims of human trafficking, and increased penalties for offenders. SinceOhio Safe Harbor law was enacted in 2012, we have been convicted traffickers inour state, and our law enforcement partners have assisted in manysuccessful federal prosecutions as well. Among other successes enactment of theselaws means that many juvenile courts are working to protect and empower exploitedchildren and youth who were previously treated as criminals. But to really makea difference we, of course, need your help. After all these are our children, ourfamily members, and our friends, and it's our responsibility to fight back againstthis terrible crime. Through the efforts of the Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force, and our many partners in law enforcement, we're really starting to make a realImpact. We're finding and saving boys and Girls, young men and women, all over ourState. Awareness and training really do work. The challenge here is that trafficking can be hiding in plain sight, and isn't easily visible to the untrained eye. In this video, you'll hear from humantrafficking survivors and learn about their horrific experience and difficultwalk to recovery. You ll also learn what human trafficking really means, the grave nature of theproblem, and most important in our efforts to fight back, the signs to lookout for and how to help.
